First Things First: The Academy Awards

Overall, I was happy with the results. Ultimately, the best film got the most awards. The Coen brothers were long overdue for a Best Directing prize. If you haven't seen 'No Country', please do. It's one of the most poetically written and beautifully paced movies I've ever seen. Daniel Day-Lewis was a surefire Best Actor and he deserved it for 'Blood'. I can live with the Best Actress winner though my pick was Julie Christie. The Supporting Actress award let me down again. I really do believe it should have been Cate Blanchett. Whatever.

My biggest beef with the awards ceremony this year was how FREAKING LONG THE WHOLE THING WAS. Almost 4 hours???!? Why?!?!?

In other movie news, I saw what is probably now my favorite Superman film. It's not live action, it's an animated feature called Superman: Doomsday. It follows the DC story arc "Death of Superman". It's badass. The movie is not completely true to the DC story, but it is far and away the greatest Superman fight seen ever put together.

The following exchange will take place several months from now:

Me: I'd like to see 'Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2' please.

Ticket Agent: Okay, is that one ticket or two?

Me: Two.

Ticket Agent: Okay, that'll be...yes, two testicles please. A full set.

Me: SLICE. Okay, here you go. And I'd like some popcorn as well, so do you need...?

Ticket Agent: Oh no, keep it. Your money is good for that, $3.00 please.

How do I know this will happen? Because damned if I didn't like the first one, and damned if I'm not looking forward to the sequel. Dammit.

This is Me, in Five Months:

Walk in Europe Tour

I'm pretty excited. What it is basically is the classic backpacking across Europe experience. A few members of the team scout ahead in a van for places to camp and shop for food. Most of the crew walks a specified route of 15-25 km per day, and they rotate who does what. Those walking need only make camp by that evening. Other than that, they're on their own. You can stop and talk to locals, lie in a field, eat panini and drink wine in a bistro...whatever.

I've talked to people who went on the walk, and it sounds amazing. They describe it as the most peaceful experience of their lives. It's spread out over several weeks, close to three months, and usually the route takes them through Italy, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, or some combination of them. This counts as regular classwork, so scholarship pays for it.

I have to do this. When else would I?

Rehearsals are bizarre, but fun. I miss OCU friends quite a bit, but I am meeting some pretty amazing people here. A few of you out there had made some hints at roadtripping up to the Shire for Spring Break a long while back. I haven't heard from many of you, and I can only assume it isn't coming together. But I just wanted to say that is completely cool. If everyone is half as busy as I know you all are, it wouldn't be reasonable to expect anyone to make that sacrifice of their time.

I am still going to try to be in Oklahoma some time in the next several months, I just do not know when.

Much Love.

Rest In Peace Heath Ledger

Sad stuff. He went before his time. I'm not unique in thinking this, but Ledger was one of those actors that impressed with every movie choice he made. When I first saw him in 10 Things, he looked like he would be relegated to prettyboy Chris Klein/Ashton Kutcher status. Not so. he was good enough to be cast in Terry Gilliam's (of Brazil and 12 Monkeys fame) Brothers Grimm which, although weird and a bit of misfire, set him apart from Hollywood schlock. Then of course came Brokeback, and the surprisingly good Casanova. And like everyone else, I am really excited to see what he did with the Joker role.

It bothers me much more what Fred Phelps and the WBC (you know them as the God Hates Fags people) are trying to do. Phelps is actually demanding of his grieving parents the whereabouts and timing of the funeral so they can protest, because of his role in Brokeback. Phelps and the WBC are hatemongers and terrorists. Nothing more. Fuck you very much Fred Phelps.

*sigh* Can't win 'em all.

Concerning the music: I've been into a lot of this Post-Rock/Ambient sound lately, ala Sigur Ros, Album Leaf, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, and Brian Eno. This particular track is by Eno, from the Trainspotting soundtrack.

I was cast in a musical adaptation of Fahrenheit 451. Yes, that 451. It's a retelling of the Ray Bradbury novel with some jaunty musical numbers thrown in. It's actually pretty good, I saw it at a summer stock theater a few years ago.

Finally! http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/babymama/medium.html I know what you're thinking: it looks like Knocked Up...PG. It might suck. I'm just glad for Tina Fey to get the spotlight on her in a film. She, Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph and Amy Sedaris were basically reason SNL doesn't suck anymore.

Go Pats!

XBox 360

I've been rocking this thing pretty hard. Played through the Ultimate Alliance and Call of Duty 4 campaigns. I have declined to get Halo 3, Rock Band, and Guitar Hero III. Smith Hall boys know why. I am in the midst of Mass Effect. Very sweet. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Forza Motorsports, Ace Combat 6, and Lego Star Wars are waiting in the wings.

I may be getting a bartender's certification in the next few months to aid my job search. They're pretty easy to get and bartending school is relatively cheap (like a half of an OCU credit hour). Being at home has allowed for more writing time. My book has crept past the 15,000 word mark, and a few other ideas have bubbled to the cranial surface, though they are just outlines now.

My best bud from New Hampshire is spending the Spring in England, so my semester at Franklin Pierce will be like starting college, part 2. I wouldn't even be back at OCU yet, and a lot of my stuff is still in boxes. And yet, I already miss my OCU chums. It is going to be a long Spring.

Hello Old Friend.

You guessed it, I'm back. Well, technically I'm gone, and that's why I'm back. No OCU for 8 months.
